Development and Validation of a Clostridium difficile Health-related Quality-of-Life Questionnaire

GOALS AND BACKGROUND Patients with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) can experience long-term symptoms and poor quality of life due to the disease. Despite this, a health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instrument specific for patients with CDI does not exist. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a disease-specific instrument to assess HRQOL in patients with CDI. STUDY A syst...

A targeted strategy to wipe out Clostridium difficile.

This study evaluated daily cleaning with germicidal bleach wipes on wards with a high incidence of hospital-acquired Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). The intervention reduced hospital-acquired CDI incidence by 85%, from 24.2 to 3.6 cases per 10,000 patient-days, and prolonged the median time between hospital-acquired CDI cases from 8 to 80 days.

Fecal microbiota transplantation for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection in a patient with ulcerative colitis

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been reported as a safe and effective therapy in patients with refractory and recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). FMT has also been reported as a promising therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Both, CDI and UC, are believed to be caused by dysbiosis, such as altered compositions or decreased diversity of the intestinal microbi...

Risk estimation for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection based on clinical factors.

BACKGROUND The incidence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has risen dramatically during the last decade. Although patients respond well to medical therapy such as vancomycin, 20%-30% of patients treated suffer a recurrence of CDI. METHODS We developed a simple/practical scoring rule (logistic regression model) for recurrent CDI using data from 2 large phase 3 clinical trials. Seventy-...

Derivation and validation of a simple clinical bedside score (ATLAS) for Clostridium difficile infection which predicts response to therapy

BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) continues to be a frequent and potentially severe infection. There is currently no validated clinical tool for use at the time of CDI diagnosis to categorize patients in order to predict response to therapy. METHODS Six clinical and laboratory variables, measured at the time of CDI diagnosis, were combined in order to assess their correlation w...
